Carnival in Sappada! A tradition full of meaning!
Even this year the Carnival period is approaching! For me it is a time to have fun and to discover ever new events!
On this occasion, in fact, I will tell you about the Carnival in Sappada, because it is very particular. Sappada is a beautiful mountain town that has recently become part of the Friuli Venezia Giulia territory. You must know that the Sappada Carnival is very characteristic because it is different from the usual event we are used to. In fact, there are no allegorical floats and the clothes used are those of the peasants.
In addition, people use masks made of wood to not be recognized.
But let’s find out what it is …
How does the Carnival take place in Sappada?
The Carnival in Sappada takes place on the 3 Sundays preceding Lent and also on the main days of the Carnival such as Fat Thursday and Fat Tuesday.
Every Sunday is dedicated to a category of people who live in the country: there are the farmers, the poor, the lords. These days these people are made fun of by the masks that represent them in a playful way.
It is a spontaneous Carnival that varies from year to year depending on the participants, the wooden masks are all hand-carved.
The demonstration begins with the arrival of the clowns who have the task of running after the children to make them run away at home making them frightened.
Then follow all the other masks that make unjust jokes to the audience, making them smile!
But the best of the demonstration is when the main mask arrives: The Rollate!
It is the mask of the Sappada Carnival and it becomes the symbol of the country.
In the past, those who dressed as Rollates could take revenge for the offenses they suffered and therefore in the country they were seen as something bad.
It is said, in fact, that if the Rollate finds children on the way he takes them and throws them in the fountains!
But don’t worry it’s just a legend!
Instead, ask the little ones “Pische boll nutze?” (You’re good, right?).
I must say, however, that the Rollate suit can inspire a slight fear for children, in fact it has a long sheepskin fur that resembles that of a bear, with a hood that wraps around the head with a red tuft on it.
His face is covered with a wooden mask, his expression is severe, he has a black mustache and eyebrow.
He has the features of an adult man, full of authority and speaks with strange voice so as not to be recognized.
Its name derives from the bells that it brings to life (rolln) tied with a chain, they make a great racket when it moves.
His pants are white with horizontal stripes and the boots he wears are made so as not to slip on the snow.
Another feature is the handkerchief on the neck that indicates the marital status of the person wearing the costume: If he is red he is married while if he is white he is celibate!
The dressing of the Ròllate is one of the most suggestive and intimate but at the same time lesser known moments of the Carnival of Sappada. In fact, the boys of the village meet in a group and, with each other and with the help of some mom or sister or girlfriend, they wear “hiln” (pants) and “pelz” (fur coat) and, at the foot, “aisnschui” (spiked boots). Then a broom is also placed on the belt, which is the magic symbol par excellence!
The Rollate suit is the symbol of the awakening of nature and prosperity. As soon as the Rollate are ready, they leave for the whole country to party! Add music, the smell of homemade desserts and Carnival is done!
